Researchers have reported a relatively simple and inexpensive method of enhancing metal powders for additive manufacturing by adding ceramic nanowires
Researchers from the Istanbul University of Technology in Türkiye and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) reported that adding ceramic nanowires is relatively simple and inexpensive to strengthen metal powders.
“For extreme environments, we always need to develop more capable materials. We believe that this method has enormous potential for other materials in the future,” said Ju Li, a nuclear engineering professor at the Battell Energy Alliance and a professor at MIT’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE).
The team’s approach began with Inconel 718, a popular high-temperature alloy. Researchers used a small number of ceramic nanowires to grind commercial Inconel 718 powder, resulting in the uniform decoration of nanoceramics on the surface of Inconel particles. Then, the obtained powder is used for additive manufacturing of parts through laser beam powder bed melting (PBF-LB).
